    Shot for LIFE Magazine during photo essay about Dr. Albert Schweitzer
    Adorable photograph of baby chimpanzee holding a cat (kitten?). This was taken in
    Lambarene, Gabon, Africa when Smith was on assignment for LIFE Magazine doing his photo essay about
    Dr. Albert Schweitzer. This photo was not published in the article, but has become a well known image by W.E. Smith.
    Details:
    This smaller sized press print was made under permission of the photographer's estate to promote Smith's photo exhibition that toured Japan in 1982 (see scan of exhibition catalog cover). It is nearly 40 years old and was intended for circulation to media organizations who requested it for publishing in print or television broadcast. It was not made from the original negative, but instead from a master negative made specially for making multiple prints. On the back of the print is Smith's copyright stamp.
