PHOTOGRAPH DESCRIPTION
This photo was taken in 1955. Rosa Parks, dubbed by the U.S. Congress as the "Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement", is photographed with Martin Luther King, Jr. in the background. Parks is famous for her refusal to relinquish her bus seat to a white passenger on December 1, 1955. Her subsequent arrest and trial triggered the Montgomery Bus Boycott, one of the largest and most successful mass movements against racial segregation in history, and launched Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the organizers of the boycott, to the forefront of the civil rights movement.
