Britain and the British psyche is at the core of Stephenson’s work. His photography epitomizes the eccentricity of Britain. Often humorous in their outlook, his series range fro price budgerigars to puppets, to the world of beard and mustache championships. Whether animate or inanimate objects, Stephenson creates affectionate portraits of his subjects and documents worlds often hidden from the mainstream.
Stephenson graduated in 2005 and has worked as a freelance photographer since. The same year he was awarded the Jerwood Photography Prize and in 2006 was selected as one of ten photographers to showcase their work at the International Festival of Fashion and Photography at Hyeres, France. His work has been published in a variety of publications including The New York Times Magazine, Dazed & Confused, Art Review, Time Out, Esquire and Wallpaper.
Artist Statement about this series:
“The canary is a small bird indigenous to the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores. They have been bred in captivity since the seventeenth century and are famous as show birds and household pets throughout the world. Adopted by British bird breeders, who over time have created many different varieties of color to the breed, they have also increased it’s size from that of it’s wild cousins. Canary owners avery from the obsessive breeders who show their prize birds with a competitive banter and bird lovers who just enjoy the sweet tweeting and colorful presence of their feathered friend.
When I photographed these birds I approached them as if I were photographing a human being: granting them the same importance and attempting to highlight the individual personalities of these sociable birds. I find each bird has an air about them; be it proud, shy or bemused, there is always something which is added to by their colorful appearance - giving the feeling that they are wearing their Sunday best.”
