    Description

Offering a special piece of authentic nautical Americana, a large handheld foghorn from the 19
    th
century manufactured by E.A. Gill with J.H. Rowe listed as General Agent, Gloucester, Massachusetts.
Constructed of wood with black leather bellows and brass hardware, three brass pipes, brass identifier plate, and leather handle.
Complete, even with hook for keeping the bellows closed.
    Size when extended:
    13” high x 16” long x 5-1/2” wide.
Weighs 6 lb 12 oz unpacked.
(This is NOT the “Little Giant” model commonly found.)
Dates to mid or later 1800s.
Wonderful condition as it’s been cared for through the generations.
    Worn nails were replaced.
Leather is original, tight and supple, and likely treated to keep it from drying out and cracking.
    Wood shows original finish.
    Light normal surface wear.
    Structurally sound.  Makes
a noise but we haven’t been brave enough to give it a deep squeeze.
These foghorns pop up on the market every now and again but we have never seen one in this remarkable condition and with all its parts.
    What a beautiful conversation piece.
    It even smells like history.
