    Description

Genuine Antique Rotary Foghorn in its original wooden housing, from the era of the first great trans-oceanic steamship liners (like the
    Titanic
    ,
    Britannic
    ,
    Olympic
    ,
    Mauretania
    , and
    Lusitania
    ).
I've only seen one similar to it in all the years I've been active on eBay, and it wasn't nearly as nice as this one.
    These were placed in
lifeboats during the era of these first great ocean liners, and were designed to attract the attention of rescue vessels coming to their aid in the event of a maritime disaster, just like the sinking of the
    Titanic
    .
This doomed ocean liner, ironically on her maiden voyage, struck an iceberg on the evening of April 15, 1912, and went down in a little over two hours.  This tragic event caused the death of more than 1,500 passengers and crew, and was first re
enacted in the chilling 1958 film,
    A Night to Remember
(from Walter Lord's book), produced by
the J. Arthur Rank Organization of Great Britain, and starring Kenneth More, Honor Blackman, David McCallum, and Michael Goodliffe
. To end on a more-positive note, this disaster did bring about many positive changes: vessels were subsequently required to have enough lifeboats to accommodate
everyone on board; increased use of wireless radio
    communication; incorporation of a standardized
emergency terminology to be used by all ships at sea; tracking and
notification of icebergs and other maritime hazards to all ocean-going
    vessels; and more.
