Description
Itook this photograph in 1982 in Boulder, Colorado, where most of the still living Beats gathered to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publication of Jack Kerouac's Beat novel
On the Road
(published in 1957). The late and famous Beat poet Allen Ginsberg (center, background) organized the event through the auspices of Boulder's
Naropa Institute
, a liberal arts college where Ginsberg taught and was head of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. Naropa is now a fully accredited college and goes by the name Naropa University.
In this photograph, LSD (Acid) king Timothy Leary, left, is having a conversation with Beat author John Clellon Holmes (
Go
, among others) on the right. In the background on the left side of the photograph, directly behind Leary, is Beat historian and author Al Arnonowitz, and behind him is Ginsberg's partner, the late Peter Orlovsky. Ginsberg is in the center of the photograph.
The print is unframed and unmatted. It measures 8 inches by 10 inches. It comes with a certificate of authenticity and is numbered and signed. This print is the first ever made from this negative, and I limit my signed and numbered photographs to just 20 prints to maintain their value as collectible, historic images.
Note:
I was a reporter/photographer living in Salt Lake City when Naropa hosted this conference on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder. I went over to do a story and spent nearly two weeks, taking pictures and doing interviews. These photographs are from that assignment. Watch more more postings from the conference, including autographs by Ginsberg and Michael McClure.
