Curtis McClung manned the helm of the Columbus Police Department from 1971 to 1980, navigating through some of the city’s stormiest years. The former Marine assumed command of the police force as the city and county consolidated in ’71. As police chief he was expected to turn a department torn by scandal and political intrigue into a professional, ethical law enforcement agency. He maintained that mission after he left, teaching criminal justice courses at Columbus State University and serving with the Georgia Association of Police Chiefs, which named an award in his honor.
