This vintage semi-nude male portrait photograph by celebrated filmmaker and artist JAMES DAVIS, dates from the late1950s and features smooth, handsome, athletic model SAM WAYMER in a stunningly beautiful studio pose.
James E. Davis (1901-74)
Filmmaker and sculptor Jim Davis was an immense influence on 20th Century art and film. His artistic collaborators, students and patrons included several of the most important names of Mid-Century Modern design and avant-garde film making, such as Mies Van Der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder, Joan Miro, Peggy Guggenheim, David Rockerfeller, Laszlo Moholoy-Nagy, John Marin, Stan Brakhage – much of the French film industry of the 1950’s, the "Lumia" art movement, and his students at Princeton. The inventor of the light modulator, Davis' work appeared in the opening exhibit at MOMA in 1932, and he was one of the trio of professors who opened Princeton’s Department of Art and Architecture. Davis was one of the first American avant-garde filmmakers, and was retained by both Frank Lloyd Wright and John Marin as their sole filmographer. The celebrated director and cinematographer Stan Brakhage dedicated his first film to Davis, whose films are now in the collection of the Harvard Film Archive and the Anthology Film Archives of New York.
BigKugels Photographic recently acquired
Davis' personal collection of his own male nude photographs, slides and negatives, which he shot and meticulously cataloged from the 1940s through 1973. Described by his biographers as intensely private, Davis never made these beautifully lit male nudes available to the art world that celebrated his films, paintings and sculptures. After his death in 1974, the Anthology Film Archives obtained the collection intact and later sold it to a prominent Washington DC councilman, in whose private collection it remained until we acquired it in 2018.
Condition
The approximately 5-by-7-inch original photograph is printed on heavy stock and is in very good condition. Quality and clarity are very good.
The "BigKugels" watermark in the scan displayed here does not appear on the actual auction item.
