Description

[LAYTON, UTAH, RIATA DAYS / LIBERTY DAYS FESTIVAL, DAVIS COUNTY UTAH]
On offer here is a scarce snapshot of the local history in Layton, Utah in the mid 1950's. This is a large and nicely photographically illustrated scrapbook put together by the Layton organizers of the 'Riata Days' festival (now known as the Liberty Days Festival) which celebrates the days approaching the Fourth of July. It seems to be a combination of a Fourth of July Parade in conjunction with a sort of County Fair.
There are
appx. 270 (mostly 3x5, 5x7 & 8x10) black & white photos + numerous newspaper clippings in addition to original documents associated with the event such as bids for the new car raffle, the bill of sale for the car, and examples of the raffle tickets
.
The range of subject matter is wide showing beauty contests, judging, activities related to the raffle of a new Ford automobile, a watermelon eating contest, a visit by
boxing champion Archie Moore
, fishing, husband calling, a parade, fireworks, the planning phases of the events, a local fire (being extinguished ?), pie in the face, Chuck Wagon breakfast, baseball, etc.
An interesting and uncommon assemblage of material related to mid-century, small town America in Utah.
